AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Reporting to the Coordinator, this position will provide public Fire Safety and Prevention education and training, conduct media and public relations, distribute fire and life safety literature and conducts special events and internal functions. Deliver various public speaking engagements and public information sessions. Deliver critical fire and life safety education while providing exceptional customer service to a highly diverse customer base, ranging in age from early childhood to senior citizens. Research, develop, coordinate, and deliver Fire/Life Safety education programs and educational materials including pamphlets and literature, videos and social media posts, and other digital media. Schedule and operate the Fire and Life Safety Education Centre, including Stephanie’s Place. Educate the public about fire and life safety using the most effective forms of media. Participate in community functions to promote fire and life safety education. Liaise with the news media to increase public awareness of fire and life safety hazards and plans special events to promote fire and life safety. Participate in the Arson Prevention Program for Children and plan, design, and build displays and props for public education. Stay informed of all developments in the field of fire safety and prevention education. Plan and schedule tours of fire stations and issue requests for the attendance of fire crews at special events. Attend career fairs to promote the fire service as a career and performs other related duties as assigned by the Division Chief, which may require both evening and/or weekend participation from time to time.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
EDUCATION:
- Grade 12 education or equivalent secondary education as established by the Ontario Ministry of Education;
- Formal education in public relations, marketing, communications or equivalent and demonstrated experience in adult and/or childhood education principles and techniques is required;
- Formal education in Public Fire and Life Safety Education or certification as a Public Fire and Life Safety Educator is preferred;
OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS:
- Demonstrated working knowledge of Fire and Emergency Services functions is preferred, prior experience is an asset;
- Must possess valid and current First Aid and CPR qualifications;
- Experience and/or training in media relations, marketing and community engagement are strong assets;
- Must possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary, Class “G” Ontario Driver’s Licence;
- Demonstrated communication skills, both written and verbal;
- Demonstrated customer service and public relations skills;
- Demonstrated presentation skills and demonstration skills;
- Demonstrated public speaking ability;
- Demonstrated expertise in the development and use of various computer-based applications, including Microsoft Office applications and a good working knowledge of various internet-based applications;
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse and multicultural communities and groups;
- Demonstrated experience working productively on various committees and with internal and external stakeholder groups;
- Demonstrated working knowledge of various fire protection systems including sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems and fire safety plans, be able to properly explain these systems to members of the public;
- Demonstrated organizational skills, creativity
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment;
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable;
- Must be able to lift and stand for extended periods of time;
- Must be willing and able to wear all required uniform clothing and/or personal protective equipment as assigned/required;
- Must be able to work variable work hours including nights, weekends and holidays as scheduled.
