Wainfleet names new deputy fire chief

Wainfleet Fire and Emergency Service's new deputy fire chief is coming from the volunteer firefighter ranks and will be appointed during Tuesday night's council meeting.

Platoon chief Shawn Schutten takes on the $90,000-a-year role created by former interim fire chief Lee Smith, who the said the position was needed to help the already stretched-thin fire service.

Schutten had filled in as interim fire chief after chief Kevin Foster left in September 2017 to take on the deputy chief's job with the Milton fire department. Foster had been hired in September 2016 to replace longtime Wainfleet firefighter and chief Harry Flagg, who retired.

Schutten was later replaced by Smith, a former Niagara Falls fire chief, who left the fire service for personal reasons in April of this year. Smith was replaced by interim chief Brad Bigrigg, a former Caledon fire chief.
