A fire Wednesday night at Walpole Island First Nation sent three people to hospital.

The Walpole Island Fire Department responded to a fire on Chiefs Road North just before 8 p.m.

Officials said that, while firefighters were battling the blaze, there was a loud explosion, and as a result, one firefighter was sent to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Two residents were removed from the home before firefighters arrived on scene and transported to hospital with unknown injuries.

Lambton OPP said the fire is being treated as suspicious. Provincial police are investigating the blaze alongside Walpole Island First Nation Police and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office.

Police were still on scene Thursday morning.
