North Grenville Fire Chief John Okum will retire, the municipality has announced.

Okum’s last day on the job will be Oct. 9.

“Chief Okum has led our fire department during a period of unparalleled growth for our municipality, and his commitment to the safety of our community has been steadfast,” said Mayor Nancy Peckford.

Chief Okum was instrumental in modernizing the department, enhancing fire safety protocols, and ensuring North Grenville’s firefighters are well-equipped to respond to the myriad of calls they receive, according to a media release from the municipality.

Deputy Chief Randy Urslak will step into the role of Acting Fire Chief. The deputy chief “brings extensive experience and a deep commitment to the community, and we have full confidence in his ability to lead the department during this time.”

Peckford said the community wishes him all the best in retirement, and they are “incredibly grateful for his years of service and many contributions.”

The municipality is seeking a full-time fire chief. Interested candidates can find the job posting and application details here.
