Governance
Governance is the systems and processes concerned with ensuring the overall direction, effectiveness, supervision and accountability of an organization.
Good governance ensures:
- Compliance with law and regulation
- That an organization is well run and efficient
- That problems are identified early and dealt with appropriately
- The preservation of the reputation and integrity of the sector
- That the not-for-profit makes a difference and the objects of the organization are advanced
- Members of the Board of Directors have specific responsibilities, which they must carry out with the other members of the governing body, according to the association’s constitution and relevant legislation. To govern a not-for-profit means to secure its long-term direction, furthering its objects or purposes as set out in its governing document; ensure that it is effectively and properly run with legal and other obligations met; and be accountable to stakeholders.
The Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC) is governed by a 12-person Board of Directors, inclusive of chief fire officers from across the Province of Ontario, in addition to the Past President who serves as a non-voting member, and the association’s Executive Director, who serves as an ex-officio member.

| Advocacy | The OAFC works to provide a strong, unified voice for the province’s fire service leaders. As municipal chief fire officers undertake enhanced roles in the delivery of fire and emergency services, the OAFC ensures that our members’ interests are protected and their voices are heard with respect to municipal, provincial, and federal issues. Our goal is to influence the policies, programs, budgets and initiatives affecting the Ontario fire service and safety of Ontarians. |
| Provincial Advisory Committee | The OAFC Provincial Advisory Committee represents our members from geographical areas across the province. The committee discusses and raises issues to the Board that affect OAFC members as it relates to the operation of fire services, the delivery of public fire protection services, and legislation or policies. |
| Committees | The OAFC has twelve standing committees, which fall under different portfolios. Committee members are governed by a Terms of Reference, established by the Board. |
