MNR helicopter drops crew into to fight brush fire off Notre Dame

A remote brush fire off Notre Dame Avenue last night required the assistance of a Ministry of Natural Resources helicopter to get the blaze under control.

Details about the incident, which seems to have occurred in the early evening on May 31, beyond the basic details are scarce today. Information such as when crews were called out and how long it took to bring the fire under control was unavailable as of this report.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services (GSFS) was initially the only fire service called out to the blaze, Platoon Chief André Groulx told Sudbury.com on Sunday, which started in a remote swampy area east of Notre Dame Avenue near the railroad tracks.

It didn’t take the responding crews long to realize GSFS did not have the equipment to reach the area, which, despite being in the urban part of Greater Sudbury, has no road access.

An MNR helicopter was dispatched to do a fly-by, Groulx said, and it was determined the best way to fight the fire was to have the helicopter drop a crew off in the area.

Groulx said the information on the size of the fire was not available as of this morning, but he described the fire as “fairly big” and challenging to fight due to the high winds on Saturday.

The fire did appear last night on the online provincial fire map administered by the Ministry of Natural Resources.
