Part of a Gorham Street duplex sustained extensive fire and smoke damage during a kitchen fire on April 14, Central York Fire Services said.

Fire broke out on the first floor before 7 p.m.

The first fire crew on the scene reported flames coming from a first-floor window and door on the west side of the building’s lower unit, an incident report stated.

The fire spread up to a unit on the second floor.

All people and pets in the residence had safely escaped before firefighters arrived.

One person, suffering from alight burn on their forearm, was treated at Southlake Health and later released with no concerns, the report said.

The residence suffered extensive fire and smoke damage on one side of the duplex, while the other side has a minor smell of smoke, the report said.

Red Cross is assisting affected families with accommodations.

Gorham, between Maple and Muriel streets, was closed during the fire, but has since reopened.

Cooking is the No. 1 cause of fires in Ontario, causing a third of fire-related injuries.

The fire department offered these tips:

  • Always stay in the kitchen while cooking and turn off the stove if you must leave.
  • If there is a fire in your kitchen, put a lid on it and turn off the heat source.
  • Never pour water onto a grease fire.
  • In the event of an emergency, working smoke alarms and a home escape plan can save lives.
