Burlington Fire Department was on scene at a two-storey home near Prospect Street and Guelph Line this afternoon.

BFD were alerted around 3:20 p.m., and encountered flames and heavy smoke upon arrival.

Two dogs were apparently rescued from the home.

No injuries have been reported. BFD deputy chief Drew Boys said the crews opened up the roof to ensure the fire hadn't spread to the attic. He said nobody was home when they arrived at the fire.

Boys initially said the cause of the fire was unknown until investigators got inside later in the day.

It was later determined the blaze was the result of a kitchen fire resulting from unattended cooking.

Damage was estimated at $1.75 million.

Six BFD trucks are on scene and more than 20 personnel. That number was later raised to 10 vehicles and 32 personnel.
