One arrested after propane tanks explode in London homeless camp fire

One person has been arrested following a homeless encampment fire that was deemed suspicious, London police say.

Fire crews responded to the blaze on Watson Street near the river amid exploding propane tanks late Sunday, said London Fire Department platoon Chief Gary Mosburger.

“The initial call was for single engine truck but we quickly realized the fire was much larger than just one vehicle could handle,” he said.

The fire department’s response was complicated by several propane tanks that were involved in the fire and caused a hazard, he said.

“Lots of bad things can happen,” Mosburger said.

Due to the Wellington Street bridge being under construction access to Watson Street was “very difficult,” Mosburger said.

“It was tough to bring water in,” he said.

At the peak of the fire, 15 firefighters were battling the blaze, pumping water through multiple engines to douse the blaze, Mosburger said.

The blaze was still under investigation as of Monday morning, London police say.
