Two others escaped the Monday morning blaze. A investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
Two women have died of injuries sustained in a Guelph house fire.
Early Monday morning, around 12:40 a.m., Guelph police say a 911 call was received about a house fire near Edinburgh Road South and Wilsonview Avenue.
Upon arrival, heavy fire and smoke was visible at 383 Edinburgh Road South, said Brian Arnold, fire chief of the Guelph Fire Department.
Two occupants had self evacuated, he said, while two others were reported to still be inside.
"Under extremely dangerous conditions," firefighters fought their way to the second floor to rescue the two occupants, said Arnold.
One was pronounced dead on scene. The other later succumbed to their injuries.
Emergency responders attended the scene and the Guelph Fire Department, which called in five stations, was able to put out the fire.
Police say the two occupants who escaped were treated at hospital for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.
The Ontario Fire Marshal's office is on the scene and investigating with help from the Guelph Police Service and the Guelph Fire Department.
No cause or damage estimate was available at press time.
Police say this investigation is ongoing.
Fire officials remind people to ensure they have working smoke alarms on every level of their homes, and to practice a home escape plan.
