Horton Fire Chief Allan Cole says a quick call for help, as well as swift work from firefighters and hydro crews, saved a Monday morning grass fire from being much worse.
Crews were called out around 9:50 a.m. on Monday, March 11 to a reported grass fire on Leavoy Lane just off River Road.
“Upon arrival we encountered a sizeable grass fire covering approximately one acre and, due to the high winds, it was moving rapidly towards a barn,” said Cole. “We were successful in containing the extent of the fire and putting it out before it could reach the buildings.”
Cole said the fire was determined to have been caused by a power line that was blown down from today’s high winds. The live line on the ground started the fire, he said.
“It was very fortunate that someone was able to call this in in a timely manner as, with the wind conditions, if not detected early it could have been much worse,” said Cole. “Many thanks to the people who called 911, Horton firefighters who responded and Hydro One, who were on scene very quickly to make things safe.”
Firefighters were on scene for just under two hours.
The incident has prompted the fire chief to issue a reminder.
“With no snow on the ground, and the very dry conditions, grass and bush fires could happen without warning,” said Cole. “Be vigilant, have a permit, and do not burn during the mid-day period. Only burn in the evenings or early morning when the wind is lowest.”
Never leave fires unattended, he said, and have a means of extinguishment available at all times.
