Trees downed in Brighton during Wednesday weather event

Brighton Today

At least a couple trees went down in Brighton during Wednesday’s weather event.

Fire Chief Gene Thompson confirmed crews responded to one call for a tree down on Prince Edward Street.

There were online but reports of trees downed/hitting power lines elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Presqu’ile Provincial Park posted early Thursday morning about storm cleanup in the Loop Road area with a tree down there.

While the area was cleared quickly Thursday morning and the loop has since reopened, officials urged visitors to still exercise caution if exploring areas of the park Thursday.

“Please continue to use caution on the trails and in the campgrounds as there may be dangerous trees overhead,” said park staff, in a post to Facebook Thursday morning.

Presqu’ile has some 16 kilometres worth of trails and paths along shorelines and through woodlands and meadow areas.

As previously reported, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the Northumberland and Quinte regions Wednesday as a sharp cold front with strong winds and a sudden temperature drop moved in after record-high temperatures in the area recently.

Officials warned of wind gusts up to 70-80 km/h and possible sudden icy conditions.

The high winds did cause power outages in certain areas. As of Thursday afternoon, there were still some outages that crews were either investigating or working at in areas such as Stockdale, Batawa, Wooler and Colborne.

There were no weather alerts in effect for the local area Thursday.
