Port Colborne firefighters rescued a man from a fire on the second-floor of a house Monday afternoon.

Fire Chief Scott Lawson said firefighters responded to 51 McCain St., between Fielden Avenue and Silver Street, at 2 p.m. for a reported bedroom fire.

Lawson said as crews arrived, they saw smoke showing from the second-floor of the residence, which has three separate apartments.

“We were told there could be one person in a second-floor bedroom. A crew of three went in to suppress the fire, and during a primary search they found one person.”

Firefighters and Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics started CPR on the man before he was taken to Welland hospital, with one firefighter on board the ambulance assisting.

The man’s condition was unknown.

A second ambulance and paramedic supervisor were on scene, as were Niagara Regional Police, who shut down the street while firefighters fought the blaze.

Wainfleet Fire and Emergency Services firefighters from Station 3 on Lakeshore Road responded to the call to assist Port Colborne.

Lawson called the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal (OFM), and was waiting to learn if investigators would arrive Monday.

OFM is called in for large loss fires of $500,000 and greater, fires in multi-unit residential occupancies, and those that result in a fatality or serious injury requiring a person to be admitted as as in-patient to hospital.

No damage estimate or cause of the fire was available as firefighters were still working inside the house.

Canadian Niagara Power cut service from the house, Enbridge shut off gas meters, and the City of Port Colborne public works department was asked to shut off the water supply.

Lawson said Red Cross Niagara was called to assist at least four people, possibly more, displaced by the fire.
