Cause of fire at former Stoney Creek Airport still unknown due to extent of damage

The extensive damage left behind by an explosive fire at the former Stoney Creek Airport has forced the Ontario Fire Marshal to call off its investigation with no new answers.

A spokesperson for the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal tells CBC News there is "no reasonable prospect of determining origin and cause."

The Valentines Day blaze inside the long, barn-style building made of metal and wood on Mud Street East started at about 1:40 p.m.

Two workers say they were inside the building when they noticed an issue with an oil furnace, said Dave Cunliffe, fire chief of the Hamilton Fire Department.

The furnace eventually caught fire and the workers fled after failing to extinguish the fire.

Then, the building exploded with between 15-18 vehicles inside. A large black plume of smoke from the fire could be seen for miles.

It also destroyed roughly six vehicles outside the building.

There were no reported injuries. Hamilton fire department officials estimate there was approximately $1M in damage done.
