Georgina fire chief to retire

Georgina fire chief to retire - Bill O’Neill will step down as Georgina’s fire chief at the end of the year after 32 years of service with the Georgina fire department.

He announced his upcoming retirement as of Dec. 31 at council chambers Monday.

Chief for the past 11 years, Mr. O’Neill started his career as a volunteer in the Pefferlaw station in 1980 before becoming a full-time firefighter in 1987.
He was promoted to fire prevention officer in 1990 and deputy chief in 1998 before assuming the helm as chief in 2001.

Under his leadership, the fire department has been recognized for exemplary service and community initiatives on many occasions.
That includes a recent live burn demonstration highlighting the life-saving applications of sprinklers attended by high level brass, politicians and community members.

The department was also awarded the prestigious Bernard A. Moyle Public Education Award last year.

Presented by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council, the provincial award recognized video segments produced in partnership with Rogers TV York Region offering a variety of fire and life-saving messages, including the importance of a home escape plan and working smoke alarms.
While Mr. O’Neill has no immediate future plans on the docket after hanging up the gear after three decades of service, he has plenty of fond memories looking back over his career and nothing but praise for his community.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as the fire chief for the Town of Georgina,” Mr. O”Neill said.

“If someone told me 32 years ago that I would be in this position, I would have surely laughed at them.”

But there is nothing but sincere appreciation to the dedicated team he leaves behind, including his deputy chief, full-time and volunteer firefighters, inspectors, prevention and education officers and staff.

“I have been fortunate to work with a wonderful and dedicated group of fire service professionals and I am confident this excellent team will continue to deliver quality fire service to this community.”

“I would like to thank the corporation for the opportunities afforded me over my career and thank all those that have assisted along the way,” he added.
True to firefighter form, his final thoughts on the subject of his retirement were community minded and safety conscious.

“I would also like to thank the residents of the town for their support over the many years and wish everyone a fire-safe future.”
