CORNWALL – A weekend fire at a triplex off Montreal Road was caused by smoking, fire investigators have determined.

LEAMINGTON — A discarded cigarette likely started the fire that caused $2.3 million in damages at a produce plant on the weekend, Leamington Fire Services Deputy Chief Mike Bradt said Monday.

Gatineau firefighters were investigating after a fire tore through a residential building around 4 a.m. Sunday. The fire service reported only one injury for a tenant who had smashed through a window to escape.

Firefighting crews from across the country are pitching in to stave off a cluster of fires in the northeast, while more potential lightning strikes are becoming a concern for the area.

While some municipalities in Niagara have already issued bans on open-air burning, ones that haven't are urging residents to exercise proper judgment when enjoying the outdoors over the weekend.

After a long stretch of hot, dry weather, the City of Niagara Falls has issued a temporary ban on all open air burning.

All three municipalities surrounding Orillia have issued fire bans. Today, Oro-Medonte Township Fire Chief Hugh Murray issued a fire ban for the entire township "due to a lack of precipitation and extremely dry conditions."
