The WFD has received 228 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through Safe Community Project Zero.

WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire Department (WFD) has teamed up with Enbridge Gas once again for Safe Community Project Zero.

The campaign shines a light on the dangers of carbon monoxide, also known as the silent killer. It's a colourless and odourless gas, which can be deadly if it's found inside a home.

Enbridge presented the WFD with 228 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms yesterday afternoon to help protect residents of the Friendly City.

Fire Chief Jeff Slager is grateful for the donation.

"We are extremely pleased to be chosen as a recipient of this significant donation of smoke/carbon monoxide alarms. As a department, we work diligently to ensure the safety of all our residents and these alarms will help ensure that."

Fire Prevention Officer Lukasz Kasprzyk says residents over the age of 60 can receive one of these alarms by stopping by the Fire Hall on Parkinson Road or by calling 519-537-3412 with extension 5205.

Enbridge Gas has invested $450,000 in the province-wide campaign this year. Spencer Pray, the Senior Advisor for Municipal and Stakeholder Engagement, says this means over 14,500 alarms will be distributed to 75 communities.

"The best way to reduce potential exposure to carbon monoxide is to properly maintain fuel-burning equipment. These alarms are a critical second line of defence against carbon monoxide poisoning, also known as the silent killer. We're proud to support our communities, raise awareness and help Ontarians implement these protection strategies."

Enbridge Gas has distributed more than 101,000 alarms to Ontario fire departments over the past 16 years through Safe Community Project Zero.
