Cobourg Fire Department begins yearly door-to-door fire safety campaign

The Cobourg Fire Department has launched a fire safety education campaign, with firefighters going door-to-door in the downtown core to promote home fire prevention.

Crews will check for working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, as required by Ontario law, and provide education on the importance of early detection. Firefighters will also share escape planning tips, helping residents develop strategies for a safe exit in case of an emergency.

Acting Captain Matt Diminie tells us more.

“Working smoke and CO alarms, combined with a well-rehearsed escape plan, significantly increase your chances of survival,” said Fire Chief Ellard Beaven. “These visits allow us to connect with the community, answer questions, and ensure residents are equipped with essential fire safety knowledge.”

Diminie tells us at the end of the day, it’s the law.

Ontario law mandates smoke alarms on every storey and outside sleeping areas, with CO alarms required in homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages.

Diminie tells us they’ll also be offering fire escape planning tips.

Diminie stresses the importance of early detection and encourages everyone to test their alarms regularly and develop an escape plan with two exits per room.
