Brantford Fire Department launches education campaign

Brantford Fire Department is launching an educational campaign to remind homeowners and landlords that they are responsible for installing and maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on their properties as per the Ontario Fire Code.

“Last year we tragically lost 121 lives in fire-related incidents in Ontario,” said Todd Binkley, Fire Chief for the City of Brantford. “Sadly, working smoke alarms were not present in many of the fatalities that occurred last year. Only working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives. That’s why we encourage all residents to test yours monthly to be sure.”

The campaign comes after Brantford Fire responded to 41 residential fires last year, where 23 of those homes did not have working smoke alarms. That’s why the Brantford Fire Department encourages all homeowners to inspect their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are:

  • In working order
  • Installed where required
    • Including every storey of your home and outside sleep areas
    • Additional alarms may be required based on the year your home was built
  • Replaced within the manufacturer’s suggested time frame
