Community members in Falconbridge woke up to the sound of an alarm in the area, which Sudbury.com has now confirmed to be an accidentally triggered fire alarm in the roaster furnace building at the Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Glencore) smelter.
We received a tip from a reader about an alarm that began in the area in the early morning hours of Sept. 14.
A Glencore spokesperson told Sudbury.com an evacuation alarm sounded at the smelter in the roaster furnace building from 4:45am to 5:35am.
“Emergency protocols were initiated, the area was evacuated and everyone was accounted for,” said the spokesperson. “The Smelter Emergency Response Team and the Fire Department investigated and determined that there was no fire.”
The spokesperson said the alarm was reset when it was determined everyone could return to work safely and the fire department demobilized. “The investigation has determined that a manual switch to trigger the evacuation alarm was accidentally activated.”
