NORTHERN WELLINGTON COUNTY — Two local fire chiefs are applauding the proposed amendments to the Fire Protection and Prevention Act that, if accepted, will protect two-hatter firefighters across the province from discipline from their unions.

An official with the Ontario Fire Marshal's office says there are enough volunteer firefighters left in the community of Gogama to protect the town.

One person is dead after a fire on the 12th floor of a downtown Hamilton apartment building.

A 92-year-old man has died in an evening fire at a Carlington area apartment. Ottawa Fire received multiple 911 calls around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday reporting heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of a building on Emperor Avenue.

Fire chiefs in south Niagara are showing both complacency and support for new provincial legislation that now allows full-time firefighters to also volunteer their services outside of the regular hours for which they are paid.

The Ontario government is introducing reforms to protect full-time firefighters who also serve as volunteer firefighters.
