CALLANDER — Callander Fire and Emergency Services is asking the public to be cautious when heading out onto Lake Nipissing after a pickup broke through the ice in Callander Bay this week.

The truck was seen half-submerged in the lake ice Friday afternoon not far from the boat launch at Centennial Park.

Fire Chief Todd Daley said the single occupant of the vehicle was able to get out of the truck safely and was practically on shore by the time the fire service arrived.

“But the message that needs to get out is there is a large pressure crack going north to south in Callander Bay and that people need to exercise caution,” he said.

Daley said an ATV went through the ice in roughly the same area last week. No one was injured in that case.

And even while the fire service was out attending Friday’s scene involving the pickup, he said vehicles continued to drive out onto the ice.

“People just need to exercise caution, they need to pay attention to conditions and our working assumption when we’re out on ice is no ice is safe ice.”

As of Friday, North Bay Fire and Emergency Services deputy chief Greg Saunders said they have not responded to any water incidents so far this winter.

The pickup was still in Callander Bay as of early Saturday morning. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Const. Shona Camirand said Bartlett’s Towing would try to remove the vehicle that day, but would need to ensure the ice is safe to do so.

The OPP did not respond to the scene and no charges were laid.
