The Plympton-Wyoming Fire Department has received 126 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as part of a provincial education campaign called Safe Community Project Zero.
Enbridge Gas has been working with the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council (FMPFSC) to provide more than 14,500 alarms to areas where they're needed most.
“It’s a program that helps fire departments educate their communities about the requirements to have working smoke alarms installed in all Ontario homes and for all Ontario homes to have a carbon monoxide alarm if they have a fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage,” said Ontario Fire Marshal and Chair of the FMPFSC Jon Pegg in a statement.
A donation announcement was held at the Wyoming Fire Hall on Thursday.
“The residents of Plympton-Wyoming will benefit greatly from this donation and the program helps us bring awareness to the community about the benefit of having working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms," said acting Fire Chief William Davidson. "Working alarms save lives!”
The Town of Plympton-Wyoming has a team of 60 firefighters who work out of two stations in Camlachie and Wyoming.
Enbridge Gas' Sarnia Supervisor of Operations Robin Ellwood said while the best way to reduce potential exposure to carbon monoxide is to maintain fuel-burning equipment properly, working alarms are a "critical second line of defense".
In October, Enbridge Gas teamed up with Sarnia Fire Rescue to donate 282 combination alarms.
