Essex fire chief Rick Arnel is applauding a move made by town council.

Council has voted in favour of adding $2.7-million in the 2020 budget for a new fire & rescue station #2.

Arnel says a new station is needed and will help serve the Gesto and McGregor communities.

"We've outgrown where we are now and we're going to be provided with many thanks to mayor and council our new facility on the corner of North Malden and County Road 15," says Arnel.  "We'll be resurrecting a new building and we hope to be in the building later this year."

He adds if there is growth in the area, the station has the potential to grow.

"They'll be three trucks in the station when we start and it will have room to grow, two more if need be," says Arnel.  "You got to plan for tomorrow, today right and we're hoping this would suffice if we need to ever grow."

The current fire station #2 is located on County Road 12.

Construction is expected to start this spring and completed by November or December.

As heard on AM800 news, Essex council has approved its 2020 budget in principle with a zero percent increase.

The budget will be formally adopted at the February 18th council meeting.
