Greater Sudbury Fire Services rescued two people from the waters of Moonlight Beach on July 19.

Firefighters received a call for service from the beach at 5:20 p.m. on Saturday and by 5:28 p.m., a GSFS rescue boat from the Minnow Lake fire station was in the water. A second unit from the Long Lake station was also deployed, Deputy Fire Chief Jesse Oshell told Sudbury.com.

Oshell said the information received was that one person swimming and one in a kayak somehow found themselves in distress near Moonlight Beach. No information, including the ages or genders of those involved, was available today, nor was information on the nature of the situation that led to the near-drowning available.

When the two were pulled from the water by firefighters, one of the two was unconscious, Oshell said, and not wearing a lifejacket.

“The safety message here is that it is critical that people wear lifejackets” when out on the water, Oshell said.

The rescue took less than 10 minutes, he said. The rescued people were transferred to Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services to be transported to hospital.

Sudbury.com did reach out by email and phone to Greater Sudbury Police seeking information on the status of the two people rescued, but we were told no information would be available until Monday.
