Firefighters, rain put out flames

Penticton Herald

Mother Nature's timing was perfect late Monday night as volunteer firefighters responded to two fires that lit up along remote stretches of highways in Shabaqua, and about 12 kilometres to the west of the village. Shortly after both fires broke out along highways 11-17 and 17 around 10:15 p.m., the area was drenched with a good dump of rain. "Between us and Mother Nature, we got (the fires) put out," Shebandowan fire Chief Tracey Johnson said on Tuesday. "We were very lucky." Johnson said one fire appeared to have started by a downed hydro line, while the other one may have lit up following a lightning strike. The fire department has six volunteers, four of whom were available to respond to Monday's fires. Johnson said despite the dry ground conditions across the region, her department hasn't been too busy with calls so far this season. "We've been very fortunate," she said.
