Firefighters were kept busy on Friday and early Saturday morning, tackling two fires in less than 24 hours.

At around 11 a.m. on April 4, 911 received multiple calls about a smoke and flames coming from a rooming house on Whittaker Street with people still inside, Greater Sudbury Fire Services reported today in a Facebook post.

“All available city resources responded, including crews from Downtown, Long Lake, Minnow Lake, New Sudbury, and the Platoon Chief. Downtown’s Engine 1 arrived quickly and confirmed a working fire,” the post states.

Crews launched “an aggressive interior attack” on the third floor where firefighters faced heavy flames, intense heat and zero visibility.

“The fire was eventually brought under control, and searches confirmed no victims, although a few tenants were assessed by Sudbury EMS,” GSFS said. “Crews remained on scene for about two hours to extinguish hot spots and perform overhaul operations.”

As if one fire wasn’t enough, at 3 a.m. on Saturday morning, fire crews from Downtown, Long Lake, Minnow Lake and the Platoon Chief were dispatched to a house fire on Eyre Street.

“Initial reports confirmed flames visible through windows, with no occupants inside,” GSFS said. The closer Downtown crews arrived quickly and reported heavy smoke and visible flames. An aggressive interior attack was adopted.

“Firefighters conducted searches and reported all residents were confirmed out safely,” the fire department said. “It took approximately 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. Crews remained on scene for most of the early morning carrying out overhaul operations to ensure no remaining hotspots. There were no reports of injuries.”
