Niagara Falls Fire Department was kept busy with two blazes Monday morning that occurred within two hours of each other.

The first, at 5 a.m., was a garage fire at 8085 Mechanic St. in Chippawa. Firefighters arrived to find the building engulfed, with some flames touching the nearby Surfside Inn motel on Macklem Street.

There were no injuries, but firefighters were concerned about propane tanks being stored in the garage.

The structure "collapsed upon itself" soon after firefighters arrived, said fire Chief Jim Boutilier.

Crews remained on scene until about 7 a.m.

"Surfside's still in business, everything's OK there."

The second fire, at 6:40 a.m., involved a detached storage building at 8870 Lundy's Lane, near The Sundowner property. Boutilier called the blaze "suspicious" and it is under investigation.

It added up to a "very busy" start to the week for the fire department, he said.

"It's just one of those days, to be honest."
