Community mourns loss of dedicated Belleville Deputy Fire Chief Jim Young

Belleville and Prince Edward County Fire, Emergency Services along with the greater community are mourning the passing of a dedicated Deputy Chief.

Tributes have been pouring in for Belleville Deputy Fire Chief Jim Young who passed away over the Easter long weekend.

"It is with great sadness that Belleville Fire announces the passing of Deputy Chief Jim Young," Belleville Fire Chief Dan Smith posted on X.  "We honour his legacy.  Jim Young - a man that brought calm to the chaos this world delivers."

Young started his career as a volunteer firefighter at Station 1 in Picton in 1992 and later joined the full-time ranks in 2003.  Young was named Deputy Chief with Belleville Fire in 2023.

"Jim was a valued member of our fire department family for over thirty years," Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue posted on Facebook.  "His contributions to our service and community have been immeasurable."

Young served as a Firefighter and Captain and "will be forever remembered" for developing firefighters in the County and throughout the province during his tenure as Instructor and Chief Training Officer.

"Jim leaves behind a legacy that will be forever remembered and treasured within our community. The Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue family's hearts are heavy with grief. Our condolences, prayers and love extend to Jim’s personal and fire service family and the countless members of the community who are grieving the loss of Jim."

CUPE 1824 paramedics also honoured Young's commitment to protecting and serving the community.

"His commitment, leadership, and mentorship left an enduring mark on the fire service and all those who had the privilege of working with him...Rest easy, Chief. Your legacy lives on."

The flags at City Hall, the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre and all fire stations will be lowered until further notice in his honour.
