Following reports of flames and heavy smoke, Central York Fire Services crews extinguished a fire on the roof of a Newmarket commercial building.

On May 14, just before 1 p.m., firefighters were called to the building on Harry Walker Parkway, an incident report said. They found solar panels on the roof on fire.

Firefighters quickly controlled the fire before it spread to the building, the report said.

However, water used to suppress the fire seeped through the ceiling, requiring operations to shut down.

Electricians went to the scene to disconnect power from the solar panels, the report said.

Nobody was injured.

Twenty firefighters, a chief officer and five fire trucks were dispatched to fight the fire.

Central York Fire also worked in collaboration with York Regional Police and York Paramedic Services, the report said.

“It is important to know the fire safety features in your workplace. Educate yourself on the emergency procedures outlined in the building’s fire safety plan, and learn the locations of all available exits from your workspace in case the nearest one is blocked by fire or smoke,” the report said.

“When a fire occurs, the top priority is to get outside. If possible, when you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. Then, meet at a designated safe spot outside. Call 911 once you are safely outside.”
