Fire crews in Sault Ste. Marie responded to a residential fire in the city’s downtown on Tuesday evening.

While no one was home, firefighters rescued two dogs that were inside the dwelling on Spruce Street around 6:30 p.m.

The fire started in the kitchen and crews were able to contain and extinguish the blaze and save the two pups.

“Crews administered the Project Breathe Pet Oxygen masks to aid in the recovery of the animals,” fire services said in a news release Wednesday.

“The dogs were taken to the vet for precautionary reasons.”

An investigation revealed that the fire was caused by unattended cooking, the release said.

“Sault Fire Services would like to remind all citizens to never leave cooking unattended,” officials said.

“Remove all items from the stovetop before leaving the home and ensure all burners are safely in the ‘off’ position.”

The fire caused significant smoke and fire damage to the kitchen area of the dwelling.
