About the Role

The Township’s Fire & Emergency Services (OMFES) Department is currently seeking an experienced professional, with the knowledge, skills and abilities to fill the full-time role of Deputy Fire Chief - Operations. Reporting to the Director, Fire and Emergency Services/Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief – Operations is responsible for the development and review of Operating Procedures/Guidelines, training, equipment maintenance, procurement, planning and shall oversee and direct the day-to-day management of Volunteer Firefighters and fire stations within OMFES. 

What you Bring

The applicant must have a post-secondary degree or diploma in Public or Business Administration, Management Studies or Fire Protection and Technology. Additionally, the applicant must have a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience as a senior officer in a progressive fire department. The successful applicant shall have a thorough and demonstrated knowledge of by-laws and related legislation and regulations as they may apply to the Fire & Emergency Services Department, life cycle costing and fleet management, building construction, Fire Protection and Prevention Act/Ontario Fire Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, Fire Marshal’s Guidelines section 21 for delivery of fire services, firefighting techniques, fire response techniques, rescue operation techniques, Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Canadian Standards Association; excellent communication, problem solving, interpersonal and leadership skills are also required.

Current certification in First Aid/CPR Level 'C’ and AED, along with a valid class DZ licence with a satisfactory driving record is mandatory.  The successful candidate must be able to provide a Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening acceptable to the Township.

Candidates must hold the following certifications:

  1. NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I and Level II
  2. Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations
  3. NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level III
  4. NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level I
  5. NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator
  6. Community Emergency Management Coordinator
  7. IMS 100 and 200

The successful applicant must have experience working within a Volunteer Fire Department.   In addition, the successful candidate must hold and maintain a primary residence within thirty (30) kilometers of the Township of Oro-Medonte boundaries.
