The Muskoka Lakes Fire Chief is urging all residents of Muskoka Lakes to test their smoke alarms on September 28 for Test Your Smoke Alarm Day. This annual event encourages everyone to ensure their smoke alarms are functional, as a working alarm is crucial for fire safety.
"Testing your smoke alarm can save lives," said Chief Murrell. "Press the test button monthly, replace batteries annually, and change alarms older than 10 years."
Chief Murrell says that in 2022, Ontario experienced its deadliest fire year in over two decades, with 133 fatalities, many due to non-working alarms.
Ontario Fire Marshal Jon Pegg emphasizes that working smoke alarms could have prevented many of these tragedies.
Residents are challenged to check all their smoke alarms on September 28 to enhance home fire safety.
