Multiple residents are without quarters after a fire at a Bowmanville group home.
Clarington firefighters were on scene at 106 Church St. in Bowmanville shortly after 3 p.m. on Friday after a fire broke out inside the home, with emergency crews closing down Church Street between Division Street and George Street for the incident.
“The fire was confined to one room,” said Clarington Fire Chief David Speed of the multi-residential building. “Everyone has been evacuated safely, and we’ve brought in buses from Durham Region Transit for residents to stay in temporarily in case it rains.”
The fire was fully contained to one room and quickly extinguished by firefighters, but the entire residence suffered smoke damage.
“No one can return for several days,” said Speed of the 20 or so residents that were gathered across the street awaiting news, noting that Durham Region staff had been called in to assist.

“Durham Region is coming down to help look for temporary housing for a few days,” Speed said. “Even though it was contained to one room, the smoke damage throughout the house was significant.”
Firefighters remained on scene as of 4:30 p.m. Officials did not have an estimate as to when the street would reopen.
