One person was rescued from an apartment fire on the first floor of the building this morning in Hamilton.
The Hamilton Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at the Ionic Apartments located at 70 Jerome Cres., between Riverdale Drive and Delawana Drive, shortly after 9 a.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy smoke in the first-floor hallway and immediately began search and rescue operations.
The fire was contained to one unit. After gaining access inside, first responders found an individual who was without vital signs, officials say.
The victim was carried outside, where firefighters reportedly administered life-saving measures until paramedics arrived and transported the patient to a hospital. The current condition of the patient is unclear.
In addition, the victim’s identity, including their age, has not been released at this time.
The blaze in the apartment was brought under control. However, fire and smoke caused significant damages to the unit and other parts of the building, estimated at around $400,000.
No other injuries were reported from the fire and residents have been allowed to return to their units.
The Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified and Hamilton Police are assisting with the investigation.
