Open house on Saturday will celebrate 150 years of firefighting services in Aylmer

A fire brigade was established in Aylmer in 1874 after two major blazes destroyed over 40 structures in the community.

And tomorrow (Saturday) the Aylmer Fire Department celebrates its 150th anniversary with an open house.

Firefighter Andrew Sleegers who helped organize the event invites area residents to drop in.

Fire chief Todd McKone says celebrating this anniversary would not have been possible without the efforts of firefighters in the past and the current members of the composite service in Aylmer.

Charity Fisher, fire coordinator with the department, echoed those sentiments.

She along with Sleegers and the 150th anniversary organizing committee have assembled a photographic display documenting major events over the years including the downtown propane explosion in 1965.

Firefighter Trevor Sproul adds it is an opportunity to meet and chat with the current firefighters and retirees attending the event.

The event runs from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the fire hall located at 323 John St. South.
