A portion of Cavan Street in Port Hope is expected to remain closed over the coming days after the historic file factory building went up in flames early Sunday morning.

“Shortly before 3 o’clock this morning, Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services responded to multiple 911 calls related to a reported structure fire at 121 Cavan St., (the property) known as the file factory,” said Director of Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services and Fire Chief Jason Williams.

“Upon arrival, crews discovered fully developed fire conditions within Block 1, which is the southern portion of the actual complex. Defensive fire suppression activities were undertaken (and) the fire was suppressed.”

However, as of Sunday afternoon, crews still weren’t able to get inside the building because of what was described as structural integrity issues.

“We have heavy equipment on scene to assist us with further fire suppression and fire investigation components of this,” said Williams.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office was also called in and was on scene Sunday afternoon.

“They’re going to be performing an origin, cause and circumstance investigation in relation to the fire,” said Williams.

In other words, there’s no word yet on the cause of the blaze.

PHFES will assist the OFM with the probe — but the structural issues have to be dealt with first, and then only when crews get inside can any determinations be made, explained Williams.

Williams also noted crews will likely be onsite for several days.

The Municipality of Port Hope is giving thanks to the PHFES team and dedicated firefighters for their bravery and rapid response.

The municipality has also issued a statement regarding the temporary closure of Cavan Street from Highland Drive to Barrett Street as a result of the large overnight fire at the former file factory building.

“The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and the road will remain closed while the investigation is taking place over the course of the next several days,” reads the statement.

Williams noted Port Hope police have also initiated an investigation.

“Heavy equipment will be on scene to assist with the investigation and to ensure adequate fire separation is maintained, if necessary.”

Out of an abundance of caution, the municipality also said booms have been placed in the Ganaraska River to catch any debris that entered the water as a result of fire suppression efforts.

“Residents are asked to please avoid the area.”

“Recognizing the public interest surrounding this site, the municipality is committed to keeping (residents) informed and will provide updates as they become available.”
