Float plane crashes into water near Arnprior Airport; no injuries reported

Two people have escaped injury in a plane crash near the Arnprior Airport.

According to the Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the small float plane was forced to make an emergency landing in the water of Head Pond in the late afternoon on Thursday, May 23.

Renfrew OPP officers responded to the scene just after 5 p.m., joined by members of the Lanark County OPP detachment.

Upon arrival, officers could see the float plane, upside down in the river.

The OPP quickly learned that the two uninjured occupants had made it out of the aircraft safely and were picked up by individuals in a boat.

Officers learned the pilot had been planning to land at the airport, but experienced engine failure.

While attempting a water landing, the aircraft capsized, which is believed to be because the landing gear had already been activated.

The Arnprior Fire Department secured the plane to ensure it didn’t drift into the nearby dam and the Ministry of the Environment was notified because of the potential for fuel to leak into the water.

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) is investigating.
