Plaza fire in Scarborough leaves tenants above shops without homes

Toronto Star

A two-alarm fire at a plaza in Scarborough on Friday has left tenants living above the shops without a home.

Toronto Fire Services were called at about 5:20 p.m. to 1989 Lawrence Avenue East for a commercial industrial fire at the plaza with apartments above.

The fire was reportedly quickly extinguished but multiple residential units above were impacted.

Crews were ensuring that all smoke was cleared and that hot spots were doused and monitored, Toronto fire said.

They confirmed that about 10 units were impacted by the fire, with two to three now being potentially uninhabitable due to significant damage and leaving about six tenants without homes.

TTC buses were called in to shelter the displaced residents, Toronto fire said.

Paramedics said they assessed one patient with minor injuries but did not transport them to hospital.

Toronto police also confirmed to the Star that they “do not have any information to indicate that this is being investigated as an arson.”
