It was a busy weekend for Kincardine Fire and Emergency Services (KFES) as they responded to two different fire calls over the holiday weekend.
The first of the calls on March 29th, 2024, at 10:59 a.m. also had mutual aid from Ripley Huron Fire Department on scene with support from the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) and Westario Power. A structure fire at the Kincardinite Motel prompted the two-station response where crews found that, along with the motel, a travel trailer on the property was also involved in the blaze.
There were no reports of injuries among those evacuated. Victim Services Bruce Grey Perth were on scene to help provide twelve displaced tenants with emergency accommodations.
The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal’s consultation deemed the fire was not suspicious in nature.
The following day, on March 30th, 2024, at 10:21 a.m., KFES Station 12 responded to a car fire on Queen Street with South Bruce O.P.P. again providing support. Quickly extinguishing the fire, the cause is the result of an engine component. There were no reported injuries in this incident.
Officials from KFES thank all who assisted in the response to both incidents and want to remind the everyone of the importance of fire prevention, whether in a residence or in a vehicle.
“The weekend’s events really highlight the importance of being prepared for emergency situations,” said Matt Cottrill, acting fire chief for KEFS. “Preparation can include checking those extension cords around your house, making sure they are still in good condition and that you’re not overloading wall outlets. Follow those manufacturer’s instructions and only use extension cords rated for their intended purpose.”
Cottrill continued, “being prepared for emergencies beyond the home is just as important, so having an emergency preparedness car kit that includes a fire extinguisher is also a great idea.”
