Capt. Lawrence "Rocky" Campbell
(March 9, 1926 - April 26, 2013)
Suddenly but peacefully at home on April 26, 2013 at the age of 87. Predeceased by his wife and best friend of 65 years, Ruth (nee Mullen), Lorne was the cherished father of Sharon (Raymond Seguin) and Mary Ann (Malcolm Toner). Born March 9, 1926 in Toronto to Catherine “Kate”, Rocky served in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII as a gunner on a British PT boat patrolling the English Channel. Upon returning to Toronto, he met and married Ruth and joined the York Township Fire Department where he achieved the rank of Captain eventually retiring in 1987 with 40 years of active service. An exceptional negotiator, Rocky served as a Vice President of the IAFF and as President of the York Professional Firefighters Association achieving compensation packages for his members that had previously been unheard of. His primary concern was always for the “firefighter riding the back step” and he continued this path when he and Ruth created The Canadian Firefighter magazine, a national bilingual publication distributed throughout Canada and 14 countries around the world. A gifted speaker known for his off the cuff delivery, countless groups throughout North America asked Lorne to speak to them about the challenges faced by firefighters and their families. Lorne also served for many years on the selection committee for the Ontario Medal for Firefighter Bravery. Rocky lived an extraordinary life of love, excitement, respect and achievement that could fill a book and he will be sadly missed by his family, brother firefighters and vast network of friends. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter ‘Butler’ Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. W., (between Islington and Kipling) on Friday from 7-9 p.m. Service in the chapel on Saturday May 4 at 11 o’clock.
