The Ontario fire marshal’s office has been called to investigate a blaze that left an outbuilding on Scugog Island nearly destroyed early Tuesday morning.
Scugog firefighters from both Port Perry and Caesarea stations responded to the blaze at 102 Aldred Dr. after a tenant called 911 just after 12:30 a.m. on May 1.
“We’re not confident of the origin and cause, and we’re looking for assistance,” said Scugog Fire Chief Mark Berney, of the decision to call the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal.
An investigator was expected to be at the scene by mid-afternoon on May 1, he said.
A tenant was in the house, sleeping, when she was woken by her dog, said Berney.
“She looked out and recognized the building was on fire and called 911,” said the chief.
The damaged structure is a combination of a garage or shop with a residence. No one was in the building at the time of the blaze, and no injuries were reported.
Damage to the building is estimated at about $200,000, said Berney.
“That’s a significant dollar loss — $200,000 is a lot of money — and I’d like to be on top of it,” said the Scugog fire chief, of the investigation.
Anyone with information about the blaze is asked to call the Scugog Fire Department at 905-985-2384.
