A fire in Belleville Monday afternoon has claimed the life of a resident.

A woman was injured in a house fire at 68 Moira St. East Monday around 1:30 p.m. and transported by paramedics to hospital after Belleville Fire and Emergency Services responded to the blaze.

The woman was reported to be in critical condition at the time while a second person inside the house managed to get out of the home at the time of the fire.

A Belleville Police vehicle was parked on site Tuesday evening as investigators looked for a cause of the fire.

A host of fire trucks were on scene Monday and police cordoned off the street between Cameron Street and Charles Street.

Belleville Fire Chief Dan Smith, director of Fire and Emergency Services, said firefighters, “responded to a significant fire event at a residence on Moira Street East.”

“One resident self-evacuated, while a second resident was pulled from the fire. The fire is being investigated by the Office of the Fire Marshal of Ontario, Belleville Fire and Emergency Services and Belleville Police Services,” Smith said.

The house was considered a heritage property by Belleville city council in spring of 2022 given the stone building dates back to the 1800s.
