Property owner billed $50K in fire code violation

A London property owner is facing a $50,000 fine for a fire code violation.

On Thursday, the owner of 19 Marmora Street, a small rooming building just off of Hamilton Road near Adelaide street, was convicted of failing to comply with a fire inspection under the Ontario Fire Code.

During a general fire safety inspection, Fire Inspector Shawn Routenburg says the owner had multiple fire code violations, including failing to provide documentation proving annual fire alarm testing.

"We need to be able to prove that the fire alarm system is operational," he said.

"Owners need to conduct annual inspections by certified companies and they also need to do monthly testing under the Ontario Fire Code," he added.

While the owner of the building was given two weeks to remedy the violations, they failed to do so within that time frame.

"We want to remind London building owners of the importance in maintaining fire and life safety equipment and that fire code violations that put our community at risk will not be tolerated," Fire Chief Lori Hamer said in a statement.

Other than the fire alarm violations, Routenburg says the 38 unit rooming home was in fairly good condition with no hygiene or safety concerns.

He says the building is operated by an Ontario company based in Milton.
