South-West Fire and Emergency Services now has some new auto extrication tools, that will come in handy while responding to car crashes in the field.

SWOX - Firefighters in South-West Oxford are now being trained how to use new auto extrication tools

Acting Fire Chief Paul Groeneveld says they will come in handy while firefighters are responding to car crashes in the field.

"They are a cutter, a spreader and a ram and they will assist our firefighters in extricating people in need. They're electric, they're hydraulic and they just make it a little more efficient and quicker to get people out when we have to."

The Township recently spent about $150,000 on the new equipment, using funds that were approved in the 2024 Capital Budget.

The auto extrication equipment that was being used before was about 15 to 20 years old, so Groeneveld says firefighters are now being trained how to use the new technology.

"We had a training exercise with the company who supplied them with some of our firefighters and they're currently training the rest of the firefighters in the operation of them. We hope to have them in service by the end of the month."
