Blaze began on fourth floor of Larch Street residence

Two people were hospitalized after fire broke out on the fourth floor of St. Andrew’s Place on Monday.

“Fire crews are currently working at an apartment fire on Larch St.,” Sudbury Professional Firefighters said in a social media post early Monday evening. “Please avoid the area.”

Jesse Oshell, deputy fire chief, told Sudbury.com that one person was taken to hospital with “significant smoke inhalation,” and a second elderly person was later removed on a stretcher from the building as crews continued to sweep the floors.

Two others were treated on-site by paramedics.

Oshell said the blaze was under control by about 6 p.m., although fire vehicles remained present after dark fell.

An individual commenting at a Facebook group said there had been an “explosion on fourth floor with flames,” with about 50 evacuated residents taking shelter in the basement of the nearby Church of the Epiphany.

Kuppajo Espresso Bar was providing coffee and sweets to the displaced individuals, the commenter said.
