Fire damage at Azilda bank estimated at $400,000

Update:

SUDBURY -- Platoon Chief Mike Valiquette, of Greater Sudbury Fire Services, says the fire at Caisse populaire Vermillion on Monday in the community of Azilda caused approximately $400,000 in damage.

Valiquette says the fire was caused by contractors working on the outside of the building with torches.

No one was injured in the blaze, but took four fire crews several hours to extinguish.

Jean Bisson is the director general for Desjardins Caisse populaire Vermillion.

Bisson says the Azilda branch will be closed for several weeks and the employees have been transferred to the Chelmsford and Dowling branches while the repairs are happening.

The Desjardins mobile branch will be in Azilda Wednesday, October 30 until Friday, November 1. Otherwise, customers are being asked to use the caisse's other branches.

SUDBURY -- Four fire crews from around Greater Sudbury are responding to a roof fire at a bank in the community of Azilda.

Around 12:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, emergency services were notified of smoke at the Caisse populaire Vermillion on Notre-Dame Street.

While fire crews from the nearby stations in Azilda and Chelmsford were en route, they could see the smoke coming from the roof of the building, so they decided to deploy additional resources from the downtown and Long Lake fire stations.

In total, four fire stations and 20 firefighters are actively monitoring the hotspots, but the fire is under control.

Everyone inside the business at the time exited safely and no injuries have been reported.

Fire officials tell CTV News that it looks like the fire started in the wall and spread to the roof.

Jesse Oshell is the acting deputy fire chief for the City of Greater Sudbury.

“Our crews from both Azilda and Chelmsford responded, and upon arrival saw thick smoke coming from the structure. We then activated additional fire fighters and fire resources from the city core to come and assist. Crews here have been working to get access to the roof, locate the source of the fire. Obviously being bank in a small community we're right on top of trying to make sure that as much as possible is saved,” said Oshell.
