No one was home at the time of the fire
A fault in a 49th Street South home’s electrical panel led to a fire that consumed the house and its contents, Tuesday morning (March 4).
Wasaga Beach fire crews were called to the home just after 9 a.m. after neighbours reported flames coming from the home. No one was in at the time of the fire, and fire chief Craig Williams said the home was being used as a cottage.
Williams said the origin of the fire was in the crawlspace and could be traced back to an electrical fault within the panel. He was unable to speculate on what would have caused the fault, other than the fire would be considered non-suspicious.
Williams estimated the loss of the home and its contents at around $700,000. He said crews arrived to find the home engulfed in flames, and the blaze took about 30 minutes to get under control in a defensive attack.
Firefighters went in after to extinguish any hotspots that remained, Williams said.
