Clarington Emergency and Fire Services were called to a garage fire near Concession Road 4 and Highway 115 on Tuesday morning.
The call came in just after 6:30 a.m. and crews arrived on scene to find the garage engulfed in flames, with smoke spreading into the house.
The family of four and their pets escaped the house unharmed, thanks, in large part, to working smoke alarms.
The home sustained extensive fire and water damage to the garage and roof.
Clarington’s Fire Prevention Office is investigating the cause of the fire, but it’s not deemed suspicious.
“It is imperative that all residents have working smoke alarms on every level of their home and outside all sleeping areas,” said Clarington Fire Chief Gord Weir. “Fires can occur at any time of year, day or night, so it’s important that residents check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms every month. Only working smoke alarms can provide you and your family the early warning you need to escape a fire safely,” added Chief Weir.
