BRIDGEPORT — After more than 21 years of firefighting in Bridgeport, Deputy Fire Chief Ronald Rolfe is headed north.

Rolfe joined the Bridgeport Fire Department nearly 22 years ago. The department said Rolfe provided more than two decades of “dedicated service and leadership” to the city and the department.

Friday was Rolfe’s last day with the department, and he opted to decline an interview with Hearst Connecticut Media before departing. Rolfe and his family will relocate to Canada, where he will serve in his new position as platoon chief in Brampton, Ontario.

Brampton, a city in Ontario’s Greater Tronto Area, is far larger than Bridgeport. The 2016 Canadian Census data showed Brampton had a population of 593,638 residents. U.S. Census data for Bridgeport showed a population of 144,900 in 2018.

The city is the fourth largest in Ontario and the ninth largest in Canada.

“We want to wish Deputy Chief Rolfe all the best in his new position of Platoon Chief in the City of Brampton, Ontario!” said a Facebook post from the Bridgeport Fire Department.

Rolfe’s wife, Elaine Rolfe, who also works in fire and rescue services, commented on the Bridgeport Fire Department’s Facebook post, calling the day “bittersweet” for her husband.

“He has spent almost 22 years in Bridgeport ... in a career he is passionate about,” she wrote. “Thank you to so many of you who have impacted Ron personally and professionally — he will miss you all.”
